What's within the entire collection?

The University of Pittsburgh is fortunate to have one among the rare, complete sets of John James Audubon’s Birds of America. it's considered to be the only most precious set of volumes within the collections of the University Library System (ULS). Indeed, only 120 complete sets are known to exist.

While Audubon was creating Birds of America, he was also performing on a companion publication, namely, his Ornithological Biography. Both of those sets were acquired by William M. Darlington within the mid-nineteenth century and later donated, as a part of his extensive library, to the University of Pittsburgh. Recognizing that the Darlington Library includes significant historical materials, like rare books, maps, atlases, illustrations, and manuscripts, the ULS charted an ambitious course to digitize an outsized portion of Mr. Darlington’s collection, including the Birds of America.

A Brief History of Audubon’s Birds of America

John James Audubon (1785-1851) began to color every known (to him) North American bird within the early-nineteenth century. He eventually stopped at 435 paintings after he exhausted his personal resources. His original paintings of over one thousand birds (now owned by the New-York Historical Society), and therefore the hand-colored plates that were subsequently engraved from them, are considered unique. All the birds were painted life-size, and lots of are shown interacting with other birds and wildlife, often in violent, predatory ways.

Audubon sold the engraved plates during a subscription series in England, Europe, and North America. Original subscribers received five plates at a time (one large bird, one medium bird, three small birds) over a period between 1827 and 1838, at a price totaling about $1,000. it's thought that no quite 120 complete sets exist today. Each set consists of 435 individual plates that are based upon the first paintings. Each plate was engraved, printed, and hand colored, in large part because of Robert Havell of London. While William Lizars, of Edinburgh, engraved the primary ten plates, Havell actually finished a number of those.

To replicate the particular size of a number of the larger birds, Audubon insisted that Havell engrave the plates on Whatman double elephant folio size mold-made paper (26 x 38 inches), the most important paper sheets available at the time (known even then as ”double elephant folio” size). Complete sets of the engraved, hand painted plates were frequently bound together by their individual owners, normally into four large volumes. Each of the volumes weighed sixty pounds or more. Today, ornithologists, art historians, rare book librarians, and collectors consider Audubon’s masterpiece the best work on North American ornithology ever published.

While Audubon was developing Birds of America, he was also performing on a companion publication, namely, his Ornithological Biography. Originally published in Edinburgh in 1831, this five-volume set contains lively narratives that describe each bird and includes additional information, like their habitat.

Indeed, his words frequently convey a picture within the reader’s mind that accurately portrays what he has painted. Take, for instance , the subsequent sentence, a part of his lengthy treatment on the Ectopistes migratorius which, by the way, was painted while Audubon was in Pittsburgh. “Indeed, the tenderness and affection displayed by these birds towards their mates, are within the highest degree striking.” Does that not ring true from his depiction of the male and feminine passenger pigeons?

The Donation of Audubon’s Birds of America

The daughters of William McCullough Darlington and Mary Carson Darlington, of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, donated their family library to the University of Pittsburgh in 1918 and 1925 as a memorial to their father. Birds of America was a part of the gathering that became the Darlington Memorial Library, established within the University’s Cathedral of Learning. consistent with one among Mr. Darlington's record books, he paid $400 to get the entire set in 1852.

The Preservation of Audubon’s Birds of America

In 2000, the top of Special Collections and therefore the head of Preservation performed a plate-by-plate assessment of the Audubon collection. they found a big number of paper tears, lines, stains, cigar ash, and smudges in various plates throughout the set. After carefully handling each plate, they came to understand that the set required the professional attention of a conservator so as to both better preserve the plates while at an equivalent time making them more accessible.

Common eye diseases and their treatment Read more information

The eye is called the precious gem of the body. Only with the eye can we see and enjoy this beautiful world. But like other organs of the body, the eye can also be affected by various ailments. Here we will discuss some common eye ailments.

BLEPHARITIS

It is a non-infectious disease caused by bacteria, dandruff, acne, allergies, psoriasis. Symptoms include swollen eyelids, redness of the eyelids, sticking out of the eyelids, inflammation of the eyes, light intolerance, blurred vision, watery eyes and drooping or drooping of the eyelids. The disease most often occurs simultaneously in both eyes. Home remedies include rinsing the eyes with warm water, shaking with a warm cloth, washing face and hair with anti-dandruff shampoo, wiping off makeup before going to bed and avoiding allergens. If there is a disease like diabetes, acne or psoriasis, to control them with proper treatment. If the pain or swelling increases. Blisters or blisters on the eyelids. If the vision becomes blurred and home remedies do not seem to be beneficial, an eye specialist should be consulted immediately.

CATARACT

In this disease, blurring of the eyelids causes blurred vision. The disease is usually more likely to occur with age, but can often be caused by a genetic cause, an injury, drugs such as steroids, or an illness such as diabetes in young children and young people. Symptoms of this disease include whitening of the eyelids, blurred vision, intolerance to light, difficulty seeing at night, frequent change of spectacles, difficulty in walking up and down and parking. It may not be possible to prevent the disease completely, but a healthy lifestyle such as a nutritious diet, regular exercise, a sedentary lifestyle, the use of sunglasses, proper treatment of diseases like diabetes and regular intake of antioxidants can prevent the onset of the disease to some extent. After the onset of the disease, a bad eyeball is surgically removed and replaced with an artificial eyeball.

CONJUCTIVITIS
This disease causes redness and swelling of the eyes due to any infection, injury, allergy or something falling in the eye. Inflammation, pain, itching or tingling in the eyes. Water falls from the eye. Intense light is not tolerated and blurred vision is felt. Sometimes the eyelids stick together due to the vaccine coming from the eye. The disease usually occurs in both eyes simultaneously. The home treatment for this disease is to shake with cold water if there is itching or swelling and shake with warm water if there is pain or vaccine. Clean the eyelids with warm water and do not scratch the eye. Avoid direct contact with the patient to prevent the spread of the disease. Items of the patient's personal use should be kept separate and hands should be washed frequently. The disease usually goes away in 8 to 10 days but if the pain or swelling increases, there is a lot of vaccination, blisters or sores on the eyelids and there is no benefit from home treatment, consult a doctor.

CORNEAL ULCERS

Injuries or infections in the eye, excessive rubbing of the eyes, ultraviolet rays or welding lights, contact lenses, chemical leaks, dry eyes or objects falling into the eye can cause corneal erosion, which can sometimes lead to corneal ulcers. The disease usually affects people who wear contact lenses and work in dust, debris or wind. Symptoms include watery eyes, intolerance to light, redness of the eyes, blurred vision, and squinting. Patients with the possibility of corneal ulcers should keep their eyes completely closed, not scratching the eyes, not wearing contact lenses, rinsing the eyes with clean water and wearing goggles. Consult a doctor immediately if there is a bite or fall in the eye, pain is increasing, vaccine is coming out of the eye or vision is getting blurred.

CHALAZION / STYE

Dandruff is a very common eye disease. Dry skin, acne, lack of hygiene, eye makeup, stress and hormonal problems are more likely to cause this disease. The disease is characterized by a lump-like lump on the eyelid, inside or outside, which causes pain, swelling, inflammation, watering, and vaccination in the eye.
Signs such as itching, blurred vision are seen. Home remedies include hot shakes and frequent cleansing of the eyes with clean water. A specialist doctor should be consulted if there is increased pain or swelling, vaccination, fever, blurred vision and frequent blindness.

REFRACTORY DISORDERS
There are four types of visual impairment:

HYPERMETROPIA

Such patients have to wear plus number glasses. Such people can see distant things well but they have trouble seeing near things. That is why the glasses with positive number are known as near glasses. Such a number of glasses need to be worn forever. So that the eye is not stretched and the headache does not occur. If young children do not wear such glasses, in the long run their eyesight may be impaired and their eyes may be irritated.

MYOPIA

Such patients have to wear minus numbered glasses. Such people can see the near object well but they have difficulty in seeing the distant object...

One of the reasons for the minus number of glasses is to have an eye larger than normal.

Therefore, those who have a minus number from an early age can increase the number of glasses along with physical development.

This number usually stabilizes between the ages of 15 and 20. Those who have more than number-3 have weak and thin eyelids.

Such a patient should have his eyelids checked regularly.

Is behavior related to health?

Is behavior related to health?

Whether it is a small or big event that happens in daily life or an important event-experience associated with life, it leaves an impression on every body-mind. We have all experienced the passion of the scene in the picture. Experiences such as twisting the fingers or the legs in a certain position and feeling relieved after the scene is over or taking a deep breath indicate that the effects of the scenes in front of us, the thoughts that arise in the mind and the emotions that arise from it are limited to the mind. Not living, also happens on the body.

You may also go through experiences like getting bored, falling asleep, sometimes diarrhea-nausea, not feeling hungry during the preparation of difficult subjects in the exam. Physical effects such as sore throat, sweating while going to a meeting which is very important for job-business may have an effect on the body due to thoughts running in the mind, aggression, anxiety, eagerness.

Such psychosomatic effects are not unique to specific situations. Everyone, big or small, has a psychological effect on their physical, mental and social experiences. With this in mind, it is understandable that efforts alone are not enough to nourish, protect, or strengthen the body. Maintaining health requires maintaining awareness about every aspect physically, mentally and socially. From such a very subtle and far-sighted perspective, Ayurveda has discussed in great detail about the ‘good news’ for maintaining health. Psycho-physical and social well-being for health

The scenes seen in the picture affect the sensory mind through the eye and convey it to the body. In the same way, the body is affected by emotions like anxiety, worry, fear that run from a particular situation in the mind. Which we will call the mutual psychosomatic effect. But Ayurveda says to go beyond here and focus on social life, conduct. Whether it is a daily routine of life or a special behavior like a student, a householder, a man or a woman, an employee. In view of each and every such aspect, a person should be free from rage, hatred, etc., in all such relationships with his elders, gurus, servants, animals, while maintaining serenity of mind and intellect, showing readiness in truthfulness. That is important for health. Asked to understand the serious reasons behind the seemingly very general suggestions. Experience teaches us what is the result of expecting more than one's own strength. But how much does he understand from experience? And Ayurveda gives very detailed instructions to cultivate the wisdom to live life with such understanding.

The list of diseases such as heart disease caused by tension, stress, high blood pressure, emotional eating disorder, obesity, irritable bowel syndrome, white spots on the skin, eczema is very long. But despite knowing all this, what and how much can we do about it? Because the effect of conditioning on the mind and body to some extent cannot be completely denied. That is why yoga is limited to asanas only, even in meditation there are thoughts about how to stop the thought, how to just see the thoughts. The implication here is that stress is also for the effectiveness of stress relief measures! This is because of the fact that stress and body-mind disorders are the focus of attention. So the way darkness cannot be erased. Light is enough to remove darkness. Similarly, if one wants to get immunity-protection against stress or psycho-physical or social disorder, then by adopting the ‘good news’ suggested by Ayurveda in the context of today's modern age, the side effects on health can be prevented.
Everybody, big or small, has a psychological effect on their physical, mental and social experiences.

Experience achieved:

Chemical powder made from amla, Dhatriyasayan, Amalki Rasayan, Chyavanprashavaleh with proper guidance can be used with nature-friendly diet and vihar to help prevent possible diseases and aging problems.
