Pradhan Mantri Jan-Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) is the National Financial Inclusion Mission which ensures access to financial services namely, banking / savings and deposit accounts, remittances, loans, insurance, pensions in an affordable way.


Account can be opened in any bank branch or business representative (Bank Mitra) outlet. PMJDY accounts are being opened with zero balance. However, if the account holder wishes to check the book, he / she must meet the minimum balance criteria.

Documents required for opening an account under Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana

  • If Aadhaar card / Aadhaar number is available then no other documents are required. If the address has changed, then self-certification of the current address is sufficient.
  • If Aadhaar card is not available, then any one of the following officially valid documents (OVD) will be required: Voter ID card, driving license, PAN card, passport and NREGA card. If your address is also present in these documents then it can act as both "proof of identity and address".
  • If a person does not have the "valid government papers" mentioned above, but is classified by the bank as 'low risk', he can open a bank account by submitting one of the following documents:
  • Identity cards with photo of the applicant issued by Central / State Government departments, statutory / regulatory authorities, public sector undertakings, scheduled commercial banks and public financial institutions;
  • Letter issued by a gazetted officer with a duly verified photograph of the said person.

Access to pension, insurance products.

Claims under Personal Accident Insurance under Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana will be payable if the RuPay card holder has at least one successful financial or non-financial transaction on any bank branch, bank friend, ATM, POS, e-commerce etc. channel either Including the date of the accident through own bank (bank customer / RuPay card holder transacting on the same bank channel) and / or another bank (bank customer / RuPay cardholder transacting on other bank channel) Rupees insurance programs will be eligible for inclusion under the financial year 2016-2017, if done within 90 days before the date.
